Amidst the dust and heat of rural Rajasthan is a treasure trove of fascinating array of frescoes. As you traverse the towns of Nawalgarh, Fatephur, Ramgarh you will see countless number of havelis richly decorated with plethora of paintings. The facade, the gateways, the courtyard walls, the parapets and ceilings, are all covered with frescoes. The paintings span a wide of subjects: gods, kings, flowers, arabesques and scenes from daily life. The paintings are mostly done using natural dyes and have a unique vibrancy. The lavish decorations inside provide an entirely surreal experience. Sadly many of the havelis are falling apart with very poor maintenance. Even then within the crumbling exteriors of the havelis you will still discover a fantastic world of frescoes, brimming with imaginations and color, an artistic heritage that deserves better maintenance.
